My course on Math Magic engaged 7th graders at Bridge to Enter Advanced Mathematics with counting and probability problems entirely via card tricks.

I provide effective, individualized math support lasting one or more semesters.

Working with your student weekly allows us to develop a strong mentorship relationship. I work to deeply understand their learning style and address their specific needs.

I collaborate with your student’s teacher to to gain a more holistic picture of your student’s progress, and we regularly refine goals.

STUDENTS

  • 2nd-5th grade students needing foundation work or extra challenge, hoping to join the advanced math track

  • 6th-8th grade students wishing to strengthen their foundations and confidence in preparation for the SSAT and selecting a high school, and those seeking extra challenge

  • 9th-12th grade students preparing for the SAT/ACT and selecting a college, and those seeking extra challenge

  • Undergraduates, including students of calculus, proof writing, geometry, topology, abstract algebra, discrete math, and combinatorics

  • Adults preparing for the GRE or wishing to strengthen their math skills to pursue a career change

I guide students to understand math concepts for themselves by using inquiry and practicing problem solving strategies. Students’ natural curiosity is encouraged as they explore and compare different approaches to problems. Deep understanding, confidence, and independence develop.

I’m committed to helping students gain self-confidence in problem solving and communication of ideas, especially girls and gender-expansive youth who may have internalized societal messages that they’re less capable than their peers. My students regularly prove this to be false, and I love seeing how they confidently use their skills to change the world!

SESSIONS

Meetings with 2nd-5th graders include their sharing an interesting problem from school, playing math games and puzzles that incorporate relevant content, discussing problems & the pros and cons of different strategies for solving them.

6th-12th graders come prepared with specific questions from their school homework and the supplementary problems I’d assigned. We pursue these together using problem-solving strategies. Based on the student’s needs, we then work on additional practice problems or challenge problems that incorporate relevant concepts in new and complex ways.

All students develop strategies to increase independence in problem solving, integrate concepts, and improve verbal & written communication of their ideas. Students enjoy exploring problems together on the online Zoom whiteboard.

Each meeting culminates with a reflection of learning, and supplementary homework suggestions for independent practice and exploration are often assigned. A detailed report is shared with parents and/or the educational team.

LOGISTICS

Most students meet 1-2 times per week as necessary to support their goals. Sessions are 50-55 minutes at regular times each week. Sessions held in Pacific Heights, SF, or online anywhere.
